COASTAL GARDEN
Designed for a newly constructed waterfront residence in Ponte Vedra Beach, The Coastal Garden reflects a disciplined approach to scale, material, and restraint.
The landscape was conceived to align with the clarity of the architecture while remaining grounded in native coastal character.
The client envisioned a predominantly green, low-maintenance composition rooted in simplicity and long-term performance. Rather than relying on ornamental excess, the design emphasizes proportion, repetition, and layered mostly native material to establish structure without distraction.

Process:
Vehicular circulation became an organizing device. The driveway accommodates generous overflow parking while also functioning as an informal play surface where the homeowners’ children can ride bikes and scooters within the property’s boundaries. Because the pool and terrace were already constructed when the landscape scope began, lot coverage limitations required careful calibration of permeable surfaces and planting zones.
Mature material was introduced wherever possible to lend immediate presence and anchor the home within its site. Along the eastern property line, a substantial magnolia from the neighboring lot extends overhead. Rather than competing with its canopy, the planting strategy was adjusted to balance its visual weight, allowing the borrowed landscape to feel integrated rather than incidental.
Privacy and curb presence were carefully moderated. Screening from the main road is selective and layered, preserving openness toward the water while reinforcing enclosure at the street. The palette remains largely monochromatic, relying on texture and mass rather than color for impact.
The Coastal Garden supports the architecture without competing for attention—quiet, resilient, and fully attuned to its coastal setting.
